Adding the Figure to your Landscapes with Michele Byrne

The theme for my paintings is THE ART OF CONVERSATION. With that in mind most of my paintings involve including the human figure. Most artists do not add figures to their work, as it is not an easy thing to do. This class will teach how to add the figure in a natural, fluid way and how to simplify the subject by breaking it down into basic shapes. Other topics covered during class will include: how light falls onto a subject and its effect on color and value in the landscape, and how to add drama with your brushstrokes.

Daily demos followed by student painting time and a critique.
I will be using Water Mixable Oil paints and will use these products to teach and demo my methods. Students may use either Water Mixable Oils or traditional oil paints.
We will discuss things to think about before you start a painting (emotional connection and positive attitude), things to think about during the painting process (value, form & atmosphere) and ways to add drama with your brushstrokes. The workshop will take place inside on the first morning while we discuss plein air painting and the materials and techniques used and then we will plan to paint outside for the remainder of the workshop. I will do short demos each morning and they will work on their own paintings after that as I critique and help them. If weather does not permit outdoor painting we will work in studio. In addition the class can opt for studio time instead of outdoor painting.

More and more artists are becoming wary of the hazardous materials in oil painting.
I have made the switch to Water Based Oil paints and I will teach this method. Students can make the change or use traditional oils.
There are many watercolorists who always speak of switching to oils and this is a wonderful opportunity for them to make the transition since they will still be using water as a medium.
